Tip for Indies-NO Desperate Mode

My desire, is to inspire women in business to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. Itiel

Indie women in business have a tendency to have back-to-back, deep discounted sales. Although not intentional (hopefully), this is desperate mode. Crystal Washington says it best here. Some Indies covet the mass retailers' consumers, not realizing that they have their own special group of consumers, that enjoy one-of-a-kind items and quality. "Shouldn't I help my customers (present and future) save money?" Of course! However, remember to always strive for quality not quantity. Sit down and come up with ways to help your customers to save money. Remember, you are in business to make money. Your profit and inventory should have a balance.

Quality products and superb customer service are the two fundamentals that should bring you continuous sales. Think about shopping at one of your favorite stores. Why do you shop there? When I shop at one of my favorite stores, the shop owner sometimes gives me a 10% discount. I don't expect it at all, but I am always thankful.

Mistakes are made, but they can be corrected. I've made mistakes like this, but soon realized that I was hurting my business. Make new mistakes. ;)

Ways to save at Smell Goods:
  • Fan Page- 10% discount. Fan Only deals.
  • Mmmm News- Our subscription box is to the right. :o)  Subscribe to receive weekly deals!
  • VIP Subscription ($9.98 annually)- 15% discount on every order (including sales). A free full size Smell Goods' product on your birthday!
  • Passport to Paradise-This is the ultimate way to save at Smell Goods throughout the year. The booklet is $2, and there are several money saving passes.
  • Home Schoolers- We know the money that goes into educating your child(ren). Home-schooling moms and dads still need to live good, feel good, and smell good. We offer a 15% discount to home-schooling families. Only those who qualify receive the discount. Email-info[at]smellgoodspa[dot]com
  • Buy 2 Get 1 Free Wednesdays-Purchase 2 (equal size) Signature Fragrance Oils for her or him, and receive 1 (equal size) free! On Wednesdays only.
To your continuous success! There are several people who can be dishonest with me, I refuse to be one of them. Itiel

Make Your Blood Your Business.

My desire, is to inspire women in business to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. Itiel

What significant role does preventive healthcare play in running a business? A major one. As I stated before, there is no use in building a business to its fullest potential, if one allows their health to fall by the wayside.

I received my first ECG last month. The Nurse Practitioner (my new physician) said to me, "You have an outstanding resting heart rate!" During that visit, blood was drawn for testing. Note-I haven't had blood drawn since my last pregnancy (8 years)! In 7 days I went to go pick up my test results. "Your blood test results are amazing! But I think you already knew that." Yes. She proceeded to tell me that I should frame the results, and to tell me that whatever I am doing to stay healthy, continue. I will.

My physician advised me to take a multi-vitamin, due to the fact that women loose a lot of iron during their cycle. Going through my network directory, I thought of Marguerite Wright aka Mom's Herbs. This woman entrepreneur and I have connected on so many networks, and she is sincere about helping women to enjoy a healthy life. Marguerite offered to send me information on my blood type (King T received his also). I was blown away by the amount of information that she sent my way. According to your blood type, you will receive the strengths and weaknesses (health risk), type of exercise that your blood type thrives on, nutritional profile, diet red flags, and the breakdown of your personality. That is not all! A complete chart of foods (every food group) that are advantageous, neutral, or just plain bad for your blood. I must say the information was exact. As I told Marguerite, I have always been able to be in tune with my body. I know when something isn't right, instantly. So a lot of the foods that were advantageous for my blood, I knew when it was lacking and I craved it.

I encourage you to visit your physician to get a complete examination. I highly encourage you to get in touch with Mom's Herbs, by clicking on any of these highlighted links. Request your blood type information! When you visit her site, be sure to RSS Feed the newsletter! Being able to function at your best, physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally should be your top goal. Enjoy the life that has been given to you. Be a good steward of your health. A business woman should be able to function highly, and show excellence in all that she does.

To your health!

Scenting My Home

Mmmmm, right now I am scenting my home with Pine Royale. Now it does smell absolutely perfect for this season, I am just not saying that because I created it. As I sit here and typed this post, the warm aroma from downstairs is dancing across my nose. I can smell all the notes that I need to, which means the oil ratio is just right. I am proud of myself. ;)

I am so glad that I decided to make available a home combo for this limited edition fragrance.

Your Daily Food For Thought.

These are tweets by The Daily Motivator, Ralph Marston. These are words that I believe in, live by, have said myself (in a different way), and just plain like. I thought you might enjoy being motivated. Besides, only you can do it!

1.Who decides what makes you miserable and what makes you happy? You do.
2.Another person's negative attitude is that person's problem & doesn't have to dictate your behavior in any way.
3.What matters is not so much the size of your next step. What really matters is the direction.
4.You'll never be happy with what you acquire if you can't enjoy what you already have.
5.Live with hope, yet not with more hope than effort.
6.Imagine being free of the things that hold u back. It takes so little effort to let them fall gently away from you.
7.What you're able to do doesn't really matter much unless you actually do it.
8.When your reasons to move forward outweigh your excuses for staying put, you will move forward.
9.Rid your mind of all inner conflict, and the outer conflicts will not matter.

Know The Grade.

Oil Grades-

100% Pure:
Must meet USP criteria for consumption and pharmaceutical applications and is unadulterated (100% pure) with no other oils blended in.

Food Grade:
Must meet USP criteria for consumption and pharmaceutical applications, but can be a blend of more than one type of oil.

Cosmetic Grade:
Must meet USP criteria for consumption and pharmaceutical applications and is almost always a blend of more than one oil, but will have the same properties and SAP value of the oil it is being identified as.

Technical Grade:
Does not meet USP requirements for consumption or pharmaceutical applications.

Refined Oils
Naturally refined oils are more thoroughly filtered and strained than unrefined, usually with some additional heat, but without harsh or damaging chemicals. Refining reduces the nutrient level and flavor. It also removes particles and resins and makes naturally refined oils more stable for longer storage, more resistant to smoking, and a good choice for high-heat.

Unrefined Oils
Unrefined oils are filtered only lightly to remove large particles. Some, such as sesame or olive oil, may appear cloudy or have visible sediment after sitting. This does not compromise quality. Unrefined oils are “whole” oils and their flavor, color and fragrance are more pronounced than in refined oils. Like unrefined whole grain flours, unrefined oils are more nutritious and have a shorter storage life than refined. Unrefined oils are best used unheated or in low heat. Their natural resins and other beneficial particles burn easily and develop unpleasant flavors and unhealthful properties if overheated.

After The 8K Challenge.

Early this morning I participated in an 8K (in the woods). I did it! Everyone operates in a comfort zone below their level. So, I am glad that I challenged myself The course was rough, rough, rough, terrain. I jumped over tree roots, leaped over fallen trees, slid on wet leaves, was close to the edge of drop-offs, ran up steep hills. My weekly workouts of mountain biking, Perfect Push Ups, and strength training kicked in. I felt empowered! Funny, this was my first time doing something like this, but I am ready to go again....

After the 8K I came home and took a long nap. I then woke up to soak in a tub of warm water and Alaea Detoxifying Soak. I followed up by massaging Essentials Soothing Balm into those worked muscles. I feel relaxed and empowered...now I am going to go chill out.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Think on this: Are you operating in a comfort zone? What can you do to get out of it?

Chart New Courses

I received this write up in my inbox, courtesy of Ebonywoman.info. I often say these words in my head, and this write up is confirmation.

Chart New Courses
By Lance Winslow

Often entrepreneurs start a new business and start becoming successful at what they are doing. Much of their success is because they listen to their customers, and exploit small niches in the marketplace when they find that people are willing to pay them for something they had not considered, but they are very capable of doing in their businesses.

Still, as their success grows they define themselves by their industry sector niche and will join an industry association. Any industry association they join will have classes, seminars and trade journals that explain how to do things a certain way. The entrepreneur then discovers that they can become more efficient if they use the methods described by the industry Association.

Of course, at some point everyone in the industry is doing everything the same way and therefore it’s just like NASCAR where all the cars are basically the same speed, same technology, same tactics, and going around the track the same way, for the same number of laps. You cannot break away in such a situation.

That’s why I recommend that entrepreneurs chart a new course. That is not to say you should not study everything that your industry is doing, and all the best management practices and methods they utilize. You should, and you should know your industry and business model better than anyone else in the entire world in my professional and personal opinion.

However, if you really want to win in business you need to chart a new course and find and more efficient way to serve your clientele and find niches that they had not discovered yet because they were too busy trying to do everything just like everyone else. You must differentiate yourself and you must go for it. Please consider all this.

6 Summer Skincare Tips | Smell Good Spa™

Who's ready for summer?  Isn't that a crazy question? Really. Who isn't ready for summer?  Summer brings us such a great bounty of vibrant colors, yummy fruits, early sunrises and late-evening sunsets. Above all, it brings us what we've longed for all winter....the warmth from the sun. Just like every summer, I plan to appreciate this season by not spending too much time indoors. How about you?  However, in order to get the best from this enjoyment, I'll be using these 6 skincare tips for healthy living throughout the summer. Join me.

6 Summer Skincare Tips

1. Drink plenty of water and eat a good amount of fruits and vegetables, to keep skin hydrated. Add skinless cucumbers to your water to jazz things up.  Lemons are also known to work from the inside-out, giving a youthful glow.

2. Allow your skin to breathe. Avoid moisturizers with mineral oil and petroleum ingredients. These products clog pores, and therefore, prevents toxins from being removed properly.

3. For a sexy, healthy glow, exfoliate your skin 3 times a week to remove dead skin cells.

4. Protect the immune system. Your skin is one of your body's natural defenses. Skin forms an effective barrier against these invaders: bacteria, virus, and fungus. Use pure, bacteria fighting antioxidant ingredients: grape seed oil, castor oil, raw butters, tea tree, shea oil, sesame oil, etc.; and,   keep the skin clean with vegetable based soap.

5. Stepping out in shorts or skirts this summer? Keep those pores clean. Use a bath brush with stiff bristles during each shower/bath.

Heading Outdoors!

6. Limit your outdoor time this summer, especially when the sun is at its highest. Products with raw shea butter and natural products with Zinc (UV blocker) can protect the skin from the sun.  Apply a yummy dose of citrus butter, because vitamin C suppresses the increase of melanin, when the skin has been overexposed to the sun (hyper-pigmentation).   Also, body sprays infused with aloe vera are excellent for soothing overheated skin.

Happy Summer!

Be Whole,

Scalp Scrubber Anyone?

I was just checking my inbox, and came across an email for a "friend" request on a ning. I went to go check out the person. Noticed that they had a website. Clicked. Then saw this cute little thing. My head started to feel tingling and relaxed just reading about it. Truly exfoliating is my favorite step in body care. Now, my scalp can have this pleasure as well.

Random Confession

When making products for my customers, sometimes (ok, almost all the time) I want to keep their stuff. Shh, don't tell nobody.

Sharing Smell Goods' Brochure

Who was I kidding, when I said that I would share the brochure last week? Last week was very busy, but ta-da, this is the brochure that I am very proud of. With other things going on with the business, and getting the details just right, it took some time for me to design the brochure. I got them printed up for free! Gotta love Vista Print.

Did you know depending on the browser that you use, Vista Print has a free page and a full price page? Yeah, I discovered that one day. When I uploaded in Safari, the products were free or discounted. Went over to Mozilla, full price. But wait, another discovery! Sometimes Safari will not have free products either, but Vista still has free or discounted product. You can only get to these products via special links. I found this and this. Maybe these links can benefit you. Happy marketing!!!

R&R Plus FUN!

My family and I just stepped foot into our home. There's no place like home! But going away is lots of fun. We just returned from the grand Disney Wonder cruise ship. Amazing! Disney is nothing but amazing in everything that they do. The shows were grand. The cruise personnel were outstanding, we met some remarkable people from around the globe. The Bahamas was laid back, we got personnel attention from our friend's brother;Disney's island, Castaway Cay was just bliss. The food!!!! Oh, the food!! The pampering!! Oh, the pampering!! It was our first time taking a cruise, but certainly not the last.

While away I checked my emails. Orders!!! I love it! I travel often, but I love getting back into my routine. So starting tomorrow it is back to the grind:order supplies, process orders, ship orders, do end-of-month reports, update my online networks, etc.

I was so busy packing and cleaning my home last week, I forgot to share my business brochures with you. I will post, hopefully tomorrow.

Off to bed......

How Are You Doing With This Thing? Ning?

Last week I took a page from the Verizon tv promos. I picked my own network. My Facebook page went from 99 to 68 (now 72, I think). Now 99 may not have been much from the jump, as I see many folks that I am connected with have over 200. However, the question in my mind is, "Are they all networking?" If they are not, that is a total waste. My Twitter page and Myspace page are next on the list. I have already left many Nings.

Anyway, my network is a collective group of professional individuals who offer services to help Indies, and professional Indies. My network is built on two aspects:
1) Those who I support by showing patronage to their business, through encouraging words, and/or helping them make business connections.
2) Those who support my business by showing patronage, uplift me through encouraging words, and/or help me make business connections.

So, I am not looking for 200 plus people who just sit there and read my posts (or not).

Ning is another social media. I truly like the concept of Ning, I believe it is more laid out for business networking. However, some of the Nings that I have been a member of, have been somewhat disappointing. The first Ning that I joined was in the 100's when I became a member. So you can imagine the positive networking that took place. This Ning is for woman, and we truly supported each other. As a matter of fact, my network still consist of some of those wonderful women. However, the Ning started to grow and today it is well over 5000 members. Did I mention this was in a years time? Yes! So now members are getting lost in the "sea", some original members are not as active or have left completely.

About six months ago, I became a member of another Ning for women. This Ning is not as massive as the other, the creator is looking for quality not quantity. What I enjoy most about this network, is that the creator promotes your business as much as she can. She also introduces members to each other, that she feel can benefit from each other. This Ning could be better, if the members interacted more.

Building a network? Put forth genuine effort.

Signature Hand-Dipped Incense Combo

I just added a new combo for the home! Click the title link to check it out!

Being Touched By Those Who Are Touched

Being in the bath and body business makes me happy. Creating has always made me happy, but noticed I stated 'business'. Sometimes the business of things can make you anxious, overwhelmed, sad, confused, frustrated (yes, I have been on your blog reading your post). In previous blog post I have shared how I had to willingly overcome certain obstacles to get to here and now. My skin is much tougher now. Smell Goods will be in its 11th year this coming April! However, four years into this, I decided that I was no longer going to look to the left nor right of me, I would keep on a steady path of "Why are you doing this?"

Wealth! When expressing wealth, I am not referring to being rich. To have financial freedom. To not be burden by things that cannot happen, due to the lack of money. To not be dependent on and driven by credit. Philanthropy- to give back, something that I have always desired since a youth. To help my children with their present and future endeavors.

Building wealth isn't that easy, but it is not as challenging as being a selfless person.

Touching others. How can bath and body products touch others? Whatever is in your heart will become evident through whatever you do. When creating, my heart and mind is on the person that I am creating for. Last week was a heartwarming week for me. A video expressing how my products brought happiness and satisfaction. Two phone calls: 1) The caller shared how the Stay Sweet Collection touched the lives of two young girls in New Mexico. One who is going through hard times with her family and life. She lit up immediately, and was so touched. The other, a thirteen year old whose mother died suddenly just that day. When the products were given to her, I was told she transformed from a state of sadness to joy. When creating for these girls I enclosed a letter with words from my heart. I am glad that I followed my heart to do so. I believe the words were exactly what they needed to hear at that time. 2) A Smell Goods' first-timer from Syracuse, NY called me on Friday (what a way to close the week). "Hi my name is... I placed an order online and received it today. I just got into the house, I am so ecstatic that I can't even take my shoes off! I am happy with my purchase! My husband is so surprised that I just found you online and the products are great! This is wonderful and I will be returning!"

I enjoy giving of myself through what I do. All I could do was thank The Most High for happiness that was brought to those individuals. Reading the insert in India Arie's Testimony Vol. 2, she states how she found herself falling into the trap of being concerned about music charts and hit records, and was loosing sight of making good music. It is a challenge in being selfless, to maintain the joy in your talents and skills. In whatever you do use your heart, mind, and hands to bring about positive results in other's lives.

Say, "No".

Being a SAHM that works from home has its perks....you can spend time with your children. However, that can also be a hinderance. As business women, most of us have become accustomed to saying, "No", to things that are not productive. But when it comes to those big, wide eyes and precious smiles, well...... You can loose a lot of time catering to your child's every "please", wish, and want. If you are spending quality time with your child and creating life long memories with them, then your time away from them while operating your business should not affect them.

If you are having a challenge in this area here are some tips:
1) Make a "Mommy Time" schedule. Pencil in your time for work. Have child understand how that time looks on the clock. Post schedule in a central location.

2) An hour before work time start giving your child the countdown. "Mommy will start working in 45 minutes."

3) Don't start an activity that you know will run into your scheduled work time.

4) If your child is not a distraction and is older have them work with you. This will help them build a sense of importance and responsibility.

5) If your supportive spouse (always a plus) is at home during your work time, remind the child that daddy is their parent too and he can help with their needs.

6) Do not be afraid to tell your child, "No"!

Human Body Odor

"You have HBO!" Coined as a teasing phrase almost three decades ago, not referring to the popular cable channel Home Box Office, but human body odor. Human body odor is not a laughing matter, and there are several reasons why a person may have body odor. The following are a few causes of human body odor and how to combat them.

Skin- Bad-smelling odors can be produced by skin! Dead skin cells exist on us all. These dead skin cells (keratinocytes) are the main cells of the epidermis (outer surface) and protect the cells underneath the epidermis as they divide and replenish! However, as the dead skin cells (keratinocytes) start to age, the protein keratin is accumulated, thus a strong order is carried on the skin. Not only is exfoliating beneficial for radiant, ageless skin, but sloughing away dead skin cells for odorless skin is a plus too! When purchasing a scrub or polish, make sure it contains natural vegetable or nut oils for ultimate conditioning and hydration for the skin. If the feel of salt or sugar is not comfortable to the skin, natural body washes with enzymic (fruit) ingredients are great for eating up dead skin cells.

Vaginal Odors- Vaginal odors come about when bad bacteria overpowers good bacteria. This imbalance in bacteria causes a very unpleasant fishy odor in the vagina. To eliminate odors in the groin area all is needed is special attention to personal hygiene. Take care and use warm water and soap for cleaning. Be in tune with your body. If a vaginal odor has a stronger fish smell than usual, a fungus (yeast infection) maybe present. Contacting your physician and asking for recommendations for natural products should be the steps to take.

Genetic Odors- In the year 1970, Fish Odor Syndrome was identified as a disorder that causes the smell of rotten fish. Fish Odor Syndrome is a recessive genetic disease that varies in its time of being noticed. It may declare itself during infancy, childhood, puberty, or even adulthood. In addition, Fish Odor Syndrome is not a solo disorder. It can be associated with other genetic disorders, such as Noonan's, Turner's Syndrome, and Prader-Willi Syndrome. Although there isn't a long term cure, antibiotics are recommended to limit the bacteria that naturally occurs in the intestine, and those with this disorder should stay away from food products with large amounts of choline such as egg yolk, kidney, liver, legumes, and fish.

Elderly- Is there an odor that comes with aging? Certain situations, change of lifestyle, and changes within the body causes that distinct odor with some elderly. Some elderly people have low energy and the desire to jump into the shower or taking a daily soak becomes infrequent. Their personal hygiene becomes poor, thus allowing bacteria to flourish on the body, which is one of the primary reasons for odor. Other causes for odors that occur in the elderly are urinary leakage and halitosis (bad breath). Halitosis is very common as people age. It is estimated that 70% of the elderly do not produce enough saliva, when dealing with bacteria in the mouth saliva plays an important role. This lost of saliva does not solely rest on aging alone, but medications such as antidepressants, blood pressure medications, diuretics, and sedatives can dry out the saliva. Odorous bacteria thrives in the mouth when false teeth are present as well. It is important to take care of the elderly. Assisting with their hygiene needs, overseeing their liquid intake, managing their medication, and introducing natural remedies into their lifestyle, can possibly alleviate odor.

Sweat- This odorless liquid creates an environment for bacteria that naturally occurs on human skin. The bacteria on the skin is attracted to the sweat produced by the apocrine glands (sweat glands), located in armpits and groin area. When the sweat and bacteria interact a strong odor is produced. Although sweat glands play apart in sexual attraction, too much musky odor is unattractive. Bathing with soap and water, along with using a natural deodorant or deodorant powder can prevent unhealthy, unpleasant odors.

Diet and Lifestyle- What is put into the body and one's behavior can cause body odors. Foods such as onions, garlic, and cumin contain oils that can cause odors when excreted through the skin. Emotional stress, caffeine, and nicotine can increase the production of sweat, and in turn the risk of odor.

The following are topical relief of body odors from Healthline.com:
-Two or three charcoal capsules per day for several weeks can help absorb waste products and reduce fermentation that may be causing body odor.

-Chlorophyll tablets can be taken by mouth to absorb body toxins and odors.

-Sage tea (salvia officinalis), or sage extracts can be taken internally and an undiluted alcohol extract of sage can be used under the arms.

-Essential oils of rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis), and thyme (thymus vulgaris), can be used under the arms or on the feet.

-Baking soda or body powder will keep affected areas dry and absorb or mask odors.

-The diet should be improved to improve digestion, ensure regular bowel movements, and resolve constipation. There should be an increased intake of fluids to flush the system; six to eight glasses of water should be consumed daily.

Tip: Oral Hygiene

Tooth Powder Recipe

Promote healthier gums and teeth, prevent bad breath, and save money by making your own toothpaste (powder).

This recipe is based on what I like, you can modify the measurements and oils if you wish. I also like to use Cinnamon oil. These ingredients should be readily available at any health food store.

3 tbsp Baking Soda (cleaner)
1 tbsp Sea Salt (abrasive and "whitener")
1/8 tsp or 1/4 tsp Myrrh Gum-ground (bacteria fighter)
7 drops Tea Tree Oil (bacteria fighter)
7 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (freshener)

Store ingredients in a container or small bottle.

How to use:
Place a nickel-sized amount of powder into the palm of your hand. Dampen toothbrush and dip it into the powder. Brush and rinse.

Initially you may be taken back by the taste, but your mouth will feel fresh, and the ingredients are very effective.

Empowering One Girl At A Time

In an October post I mentioned about how excited I was to be cross-marketing with another business. With months of communicating via email, I am pleased to announce that this endeavor has positive results.

It is true what they say, that "great minds think alike". As the owner of Black Girl Tees, an online t-shirt business that promotes the self-esteem of black women and girls, I am delighted to come together with Itiel McVay of Smell Goods '98 to support and uplift young women. 2009 is truly a year of change – this year, let's change the way our girls think about themselves and the world around them. In a society that assigns value to superficial traits, girls need affirmation that their true value lies within. They are beautiful gems to be treasured, adored and protected. In that context, we present to you this decorative poster to commemorate how truly awesome our girls are. It is our hope that the young women in your lives will feel the love and support you have for them with the gifting of this special item. For we know, just as you do, how precious the spirit of a girl truly is. Let's make sure that girls know this same truth. ~Anilia Arneus

How appropriate that we come together for this mission? The Stay Sweet Collection, a Smell Goods' creation, is a body care line for girls that promote self-worth with positive affirmations. The Stay Sweet Collection was created to enhance the inside and outside beauty.

Anilia Arneus has designed this poster just for Smell Goods. This decorative poster will be a gift with a purchase of the Stay Sweet Sugar Whip or the Stay Sweet Spritzer!

"Girls are: smart, beautiful, strong, courageous, funny, cute, important, graceful, feminine, blessed, divine, sweet, leaders, friends, loved, athletic, talented, priceless, just like me!"

Smell Goods '98 donates a percentage of sales from the Stay Sweet Collection to grass-root organizations. Such as The Teen L.U.V.E Program that is on the right sidebar.

Conversation With a Divapreneur

I've recently been published in the magazine Divapreneur! Mompreneur and sistapreneur, Tracey Brooks is one of the magazines contributing writers, and she did a write-up about me and my business. Once again I am honored and grateful.

You can download the copy for $5 or purchase the hard copy for $14.95. It's worth it! There are so many motivational and inspirational articles from contributing writers, and the magazine includes art, crafts, and other treasures. I am looking forward to introducing myself and adding some of the writers and featured Indies to my network.

An Organic Love Discovery

Last week my sister (friend) was talking to me about her hair. She is going back to her natural, beautiful curly hair. No more Relaxers (she did not need them anyway)! The one thing that women ("black") are most surprised about when going natural is the dryness of the hair. Yes, natural hair needs plenty of hydration. Natural hair is very fragile and can easily break if not moisturized . Every curl has the potential for breakage. She is always online trying to find the best natural hair care products. So far she has been somewhat disappointed, but the hunt is still on. She was on the hunt for a shampoo, so I suggested Dr. Bonner's vegetable castile. Itiel, why did you suggest another brands vegetable castile when you sale a very healthy, luxurious vegetable castile product? I remember using Organic Love on my hair once and it took me awhile to rinse it out of these locs! But, then it hit me! On Dr. Bonner's bottle it reads, dilute, dilute, dilute! I did not dilute my base! The formulation for Organic Love is for the body. Ah ha! Diluting worked fantastically! I washed my daughters' hair last night and the softness and shine is just amazing. No squeakiness from the chemicals stripping the hair of natural oils, just nice fluffy natural locs.

Organic Love is an organic vegetable castile soap enriched with Raw African Black Soap (also for shampooing) and Green Papaya. No surfactants (SLS or the others). It is nourishing for the skin and now I (and you) know it is great for cleaning and moisturizing the hair!

To use as shampoo (for 8 oz):
-Use this mixture if you have to have suds. More suds does not equal clean.
1/2 cup of Organic Love, 1/2 cup purified water

-This mixture delivers nice suds, just not as much.
1/4 cup of Organic Love, 3/4 cup purified water

The style:
I styled my daughter's hair in a loop style. It is a two-in-one type of style for locs. It can be worn like this for weeks, then taken down to be very curly, like my profile pic. Take two locs and tie them like a shoestring (without the bows of course) continuously until you get to the ends, work ends back into loop or secure with black rubber bands.

FYI: Although there are many products that can help you achieve moisture for your hair and skin, remember that water is the best hydrator!

Tip: Castor Oil Packs

Castor Oil is used a lot in the products that I create. I love it! Not only are the healing properties superior when applied topically, but when absorbed into the skin the body's lymphatic tissue benefits too! I've taken this excerpt from an online article that I enjoyed reading. If you, or someone you know, are suffering from edema, arthritis, boils, hyperactivity, colon problems, etc, the castor oil packs could be beneficial.

Castor Oil Packs

One of the most useful and least utilized methods of using castor oil is to employ packs. Packs are an economical and efficient method of absorbing the ricinoleic acid and other healing components of castor oil directly into body tissues. (The following basic procedure was outlined in several of the readings of Edgar Cayce.)

To make a castor oil pack you will need the following items: cold pressed castor oil, a standard heating pad, a plastic garbage bag, two or three one-foot square pieces of wool or cotton flannel and one large bath towel.

1. Start by placing the heating pad on a flat surface and turn the setting to high.

2. On top of the pad lay the plastic garbage bag. Next, soak the flannel pieces with castor oil generally about 1/2 cup) and lay them on top of the garbage bag and heating pad.

3. The entire pack can now be placed against the body with the oil-soaked flannel on the skin. For general conditions the pack should be placed on the abdomen. (For treating lower back problems, the pack can be placed there.) To help hold the pack in place and to keep oil from getting on bedding, etc., the body can be wrapped in a large bath towel.

4. The pack should remain in place for at least one hour and the temperature of the heating pad should be kept at the highest temperature tolerable to the patient.

5. When you remove the pack, the remaining oil can be massaged into the skin or cleaned off using a little soda water made from 1 quart of warm water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda.

6. The flannel can be reused if stored properly after removing the pack. Put the flannel in either a plastic bag or zip-loc container and place it in the refrigerator. Before using it next time let it warm up and always add another 1 or 2 tablespoons of fresh cold pressed castor oil. (After a month of use I would recommend using new flannel.)

Conditions Responding to Castor Oil Packs

Due to the many effects of its fatty acid component, ricinoleic acid, the use of castor oil can be used topically to treat a wide variety of health complaints.

Lymphatic Congestion

Obviously, conditions known to be related to poor drainage of the lymphatic system will tend to benefit from this type of therapy. These would include complaints such as:

1. chronic fluid retention with swollen joints and pain
2. arthritis
3. upper respiratory infections involving the sinuses,
tonsils and inner ear
4. colon problems like Crohn's disease or colitis
5. gallbladder disease
6. boils
7. liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, enlargement or congestion
8. menstrual-related congestion
9. appendicitis
10. hyperactivity
11. constipation, bowel impaction or adhesions
12. swollen lymph nodes
13. bladder and vaginal infections

Neurological Problems

Several neurological problems have also been responsive to castor oil. These include:

1. nerve inflammations such as sciatica, shingles, etc.
2. Parkinson's disease
3. multiple sclerosis
4. migraine headaches
5. cerebral palsy

AIDS

Conditions that stress or compromise the immune system will very often benefit from castor oil packs. Nowhere is this more obvious than with AIDS. I have talked with several AIDS patients who have added castor oil packs (usually for one hour a day) to their treatment regimen with very positive results. Within two weeks, it was not uncommon for them to see increases in their WBC counts (white blood cell counts), platelet counts, hematocrit readings and RBC counts (red blood cells).

I should mention also that in addition to the castor oil packs most of those I talked to are also drinking a combination of olive oil and lemon juice to further stimulate lymphatic flow and liver activity. It can be made by blending the following:

1 clean whole lemon, (pulp, rind, seeds and all)
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 cups of distilled water
4 rounded tablespoons of frozen orange juice concentrate

The blended material is then strained through a wire strainer to remove the pulp, which is discarded. The remaining liquid is divided in four equal portions of approximately 1/4 cup each and a portion is consumed with each of the three daily meals and before bedtime.

In addition to stimulating lymphatic flow, the drink increases the flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder, which, in turn, enhances one's ability to digest essential fatty acids through the Peyer's patches in the small intestine. It is not uncommon for AIDS patients to experience weight gain and a reversal of a long list of complaints often associated with fatty acid deficiencies.
