{Part 2} It Takes a Village to Raise a Woman Entrepreneur - Let's Get Gritty

"Success as an entrepreneur involves making and constantly re-committing to the decision to stay the course. It is about an acceptance of success as a process, and not a specific end-result. Of course, results matter in business, but since results can only be influenced, and not guaranteed, entrepreneurs must look to process, not result, as a prime opportunity to align with their desired results." -Akilah S. Richards

I don't know about you, but some days being an entrepreneur can make me long for a subconscious familiar place - my mother's womb. When those did-not-work results rise to the surface of my skin, it's those days that the fetal position consoles me from within. And although physically I cannot return, it helps to allow myself that meditative thought. I emerge with new ideas, repurpose ideas, and the knowing that I've never been afraid to trust the process. I often think that uncertainty of the process is because of the familiarity of what-can-go-wrong. But I progress on my journey with the understanding that I did not have a hand in the process of arriving through the matrix of my mother. Let go and look to the process.

Saturday Night
This past Saturday night while enjoying my late night with King T., I decided to go online to look into getting some more candles.  I visited the website of a micro-business that I've purchased from before. To my jaw-drop surprise, they closed their virtual doors.  Being a woman-ran business, producing beautifully scented candles, very good branding, and phenomenal customer interaction are the reasons I gave my support to this business.

I'm sure there are several reasons for the closing (they gave a general statement). When the process starts to become uncertain.... I'm familiar with those reasons.....

Earlier Last Year
I wanted to give more. I wanted more for myself. I wanted more for my children. I put the business expectations aside, decided to continue to live and thrive from my holistic-entrepreneur approach. Decided to be more in what I love. TRUSTING THE PROCESS. More.

Yesterday
I opened this post with words from someone I truly have (Dare I admit it?) an endearment for. I'm not sure if Akilah lives in my headspace, but she always manages to pop up with nourishment for my thoughts. Akilah posted on LinkedIn about The Importance of Tenacity. She shared an inspiring quote from Amelia Earhart, and her personal story about Dr. Lonnie Johnson (also inspiring).  OK, you got me, is what I thought when reading to the end of her post. Akilah reminded me of the places that for the longest I've operated from, and to never forget it.  Yes, Akilah, because I am emotionally invested in my work, things get tough, but my imperfect self cherishes the practice.

Grab yourself a dose of Akilah-inspired words here

October 2014
So I came back from my annual break. Ready. And as you know, when I make a decision, I trust it. I knew that in order to continue to provide quality products with superior ingredients to my customers and shoppers, I had to do a business shift. I sat down with my husband and spoke the words that I only thought about.  It's amazing the clarity that comes when words are said out loud. I was always hesitant about what I knew I needed to do, what the process was calling me to do, but in that moment of disclosing it to the one I trust the most it all became clear.

It was time for me to move forward in my business-to-business endeavor with women entrepreneurs everywhere, not just via email (it worked successfully for a time, but it was just within my network). Furthermore, to (continue to) neglect/ignore/not acknowledging the buying patterns of shoppers would be a downfall in business that could've been prevented, jeopardizing our virtual doors being closed (setting back other endeavors on the horizon).

After the annual sale in November the shift was made. Select products were made available to retail shoppers during certain times of the year.  I articulated my decision to Ivy, a collaboration partner (She's another woman entrepreneur that I am becoming fond of. We have great synergy.), and she reminded me of the buzz term Pop-Up Shop. I like it, because it defines the shift exactly. Thanks, Ivy.

Today
So just like the grittiness from sand that removes dead skin to allow new skin, it will always take the grit that has made its way into me to endure on this journey of entrepreneurship.  All while being encouraged by other women entrepreneurs, encouraging other women entrepreneurs, and of course looking to the process.

What does your today look like? Do you have grit like sand? Are you looking to the process?

Thank you for reading.

How My Daughter's Flight Cried and Fight Said, "Shut up!" | Smell Good Spa™

So, let me tell you about my adventure yesterday.

Yesterday, we celebrated a new year with King T.  A few months back, our daughters and I planned to gift him with a day at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.  This place is grand.  You can go and do absolutely nothing and absolutely everything and will have a memorable time.

One of our planned adventures was a twenty-foot-above-ground obstacle course.  While waiting for our turn, we observed the small children and adults (including seniors) who ventured out before us. Although they all seemed to be getting through the course successfully, the concentrating eyes and clenched jaws were giving me pause.  But, it can't be that bad. Right?

"Next person," said the attendant.  I go up the steps, she connects me to the safety rope, and looks me in the eyes sternly.  "Once you begin this course, you have to finish it."  Only thing I could imagine at that moment was a steel door closing between me, her, my family and everyone else standing in line. Gulp.

Twenty feet above ground doesn't sound too bad -- when you're on the ground.

Our Shared Perspectives

Once the course was over, as a family we shared exactly how we felt about that adventure.

King T. - What have I've gotten myself into. It was great, man.  Loved it.

Me- Ditto. But also, I took on each obstacle at a time.  I did not think about the one ahead.  And after each one, I stood on the platform feeling accomplished and determine to master the next.

Warrior Princess Z. - The first step was harder than I thought.  I did not try to control the safety rope, because I knew it would come with me.  I was able to plan my strategy and not think so much about falling to the ground, because I knew that I could rely on the safety rope.

Warrior Princess T. - Well.... we did not have to ask her about her perspective, because we heard it (everyone there heard it).

Her Fight Overpowers Her Flight

My young lady snot-nose cried on the fourth obstacle.  Do I blame her?  Not at all.  She physically displayed what we ALL were feeling.  Although she was hesitant from the first step, never once did she say, "I can't do this.  I don't want to do this.  I'm turning back."  I heard her crying behind me.  And although I empathized with her, I could not, would not default to the "mommy is here" mode. Why?  Because I know my child.  Her fight always wins out.  And to be honest, she likes for me to just be there, not hover (I like that about my children).

So, there she was crying, yet each time I looked up (Warrior Princess Z. and I were finished. Woo.), she was finished with one obstacle and on to the next.  Her daddy was just heart-melting brilliant -- encouraging her.  The couple behind her were encouraging her.  And the fifty plus people waiting in line were cheering her on.  They even clapped and congratulated her when she was finished. They understood.  I was/am so proud of my girl.  I did not hug her.  I high-fived her and patted her on the shoulder and said, "You did good."  She liked that.

As we walked and talked, I said, "I bet if we come back next week, you'll be able to do that course again." She replied with a resounding, "Yup."  Back straight.  No hesitation in her response.  A determine look.

Don't you just love that?

We All Have It

Flight and Fight is within us all.

You know that feeling, that inadequate feeling.

Flight tells you to stay in bed; no one is going to support this project; you failed, why not give up; how dare you think you deserve to feel accomplished.  And it's so audible!  That was flight crying from the mouth of my daughter.

Fight tells you to persevere; get your butt out of bed, off the sofa; make some phone calls; stay present in what you want to accomplish; this project will get done; how are you going to get support if you don't do; how will you know if you don't try; so what you failed, but did you learn?

My daughter is a prime example of how if you want it bad enough, if you want to overcome obstacles in the way, if you want to get down from a twenty-foot obstacle course, you have got to let Fight propel you forward.

So many days I have felt the warm caress from Flight. Fight reminds me that it's a trick. Revolt!

Flight is needed.  It's there for a very good reason.  That reason..... Danger.  So, if you're not in danger from your aspirations, don't rely on it.  Instead rely on the safety rope called Fight.

Remember, when it comes to accomplishing goals, the only difference between those who succeed and those who don't is Flight or Fight.

When those lack-of-funds situations arise, flight says, get a job.  But fight reminds you of the wisdom to monetize on your skills and talents.

Which do you choose today, Flight or Fight?

Below are photos of our adventure (one has a short video snippet of King T. on the Mega Zip, 46-foot drop, 1,123 feet zip).  Enjoy.

"Are you scared?" "Yes. Sh*tless." | Smell Good Spa™

Talk to yourself much?  Yes, I do - I like talking to insightful people.  Funny how it's yourself that can shine light (constantly) on exactly who you are and what you are made of.  The post title is a conversation between me and myself, last December....

Today I have the opportunity to walk through a door that has opened for me.

Working with the assumption that a certain place in life is owed to you; that arrogant, prideful swell in the chest that says, "You deserve it more than ____", is an ungrateful manner of being.  Years ago, until I set out on my journey to get right (#2),  I operated in that ungrateful manner.  Until myself said, look at you - do you really believe that anything good can come from this state of being? You haven't put in the work.  You need to focus on personal evolvement, purposely and consciously put it into your business, allow it to flow out onto your family and others...see what happens.  Because what you believe you want will not happen until......

....my mind and heart focused on purpose.  Not money.  Not granduer.  And certainly not, "I don't care what people think about me", because in actuality (talking to you too, woman entrepreneur), when you operate from that place of insecurity you do care about what others are thinking, you are just fighting to stay in your comfort zone.

I grew weary, but never took the option to quit.  The more fight than flight encourage me to put in the work.

Today is the beginning of me doing several interviews for broadcast radio.  Yay!  I was completely focused on steadily building my personal and business foundation that I didn't see it coming.  Who would of thought?!  I did. What you want isn't always what you get when you think you're ready or deserve it.  What you need comes to you when you are ready.  I knew you could prove it to yourself, Itiel.  Besides, who knows you better than me. -Myself

Life happens when you come out of your comfort zone to heal, to grow, to evolve.

Am I scared?  Sh*tless.  And I am so ready for it.

What comfort zones have you stepped out of lately?  Share.  Let's celebrate together.

Her ROCK Journey | Smell Good Spa™

ROCKS >>  A girl who is learning that she is enough.  A girl who is learning to use her power for good and not evil.   A girl who esteems other girls.   A girl who is learning the big difference between needs and NEEDY.  A girl who makes mistakes, but isn't afraid to make a Way.

All those and more, to help her on her journey to becoming a whole woman.  Her ROCK Journey.

I am a mommy to girls.  Empowering my daughters is not a part-time kind of thing.  In fact, empowering words were spoken to my children while they were in my womb.  Although the words are self-esteem and self-worth, it really is the mission of the parents to help that child understand SELF.

I created the Stay Sweet Power Scents to help mommies (and daddies), as they encourage their daughter(s) on the journey of self-awareness.  I've received heartfelt messages from mothers, telling me that after having a bad day at school, their daughters come home to read the affirmations on the Stay Sweet products, and are reassured about who they are.  I must admit, I feel extra special when the Warrior Princesses hug me in the morning, and I can smell the Power Scents.  They make it a part of their morning routine: soap & water, toothpaste, Power Scents.... LOL.  I think that's pretty cool.

Thank you for welcoming my products into your home - to inspire, motivate, encourage, and uplift your daughter, niece, granddaughter, and the little girl next door.

How to Accept Yourself and Be Confident_Identity Magazine :: Taking Chances

My tip for How to Accept Yourself and Be Confident is live, on Identity Magazine.  This isn't my first contribution to the online magazine.... Becoming an "expert contributor" expert contributor is part of my 360 evolution--taking chances.  You've probably noticed the affix, taking chances, in a few post titles.  I plan on sharing more about that evolution in another post (I think).

In December 2011, I happened (so I think) to check out my timeline on Twitter.  I saw a tweet (well, it actually jumped out at me) asking for people to share about a feel-good gift.  Seeing that feel good is part of my soul-mantra, I automatically clicked the link to contribute.  Then...  I.  Clicked.  Out.  Of.  The.  Page.  DOUBT.  One thing I've accepted about evolving is that "she" is always going to appear.  Who is "she"?  The other part of you.  The other part of me.  The flip side.... You can throw "her" off  her game by embracing her.  Nope you can't get rid of her you.  "I know you are here, but I've been allowing you to rule, for decades.  It's my turn, my time.  I've cultivated too much to not take these chances.  So, me, I'm gonna shine *In my Estelle voice*."

See, I'm getting off my topic.  I'll do another blog post about that evolution (I think).

I told King T. about the tweet, he said, 'That's you all day, baby'.  :o)))))

I think the words were waiting to be typed.  My heart, brain, and fingers took over, and in no time, I submitted my contribution.  Out of 52 entries, 19 were selected......mine was one of them.  I just giggled so hard when they sent me the Live email.  The Warrior Princesses joined in on the giggles, and they gave me their sincere, 'Good job, mommy'.

Feel-good Gifts

Boom #1!

"OK, that's it.  This is my only contribution.  I'm good."  Man.  Why did my eyes catch that CONTRIBUTE tab.  Hand to mouse.  Click.  Two weeks later.... We would like for you to share your tips on getting a boost.  Again, I was ready.

My tip was accepted, again.

Give your Mind, Body and Brain a Boost

Yes, I know that's not me in the picture.  When I saw other women showing who they were, I was like, WHAT.  Now I know.  Those who know me, know I have no problem with putting my picture up.  LOL.

Boom #2!

During that same week... We would like to know How to Accept Yourself and Be Confident, since February is the month of love.  At the time of receiving this email, I was sitting outside waiting for one of the Warrior Princesses to come out of theatre class.  Sharing my experiences about my evolving period is something I do willingly, to help other women to see that they can be happy, in all aspects of their life.  I immediately begin typing in my Notes.  The submission wasn't due for another week, but why wait, right?  I would be ready.

I think 13 entries were submitted.  I got the Live email, so happy that I did, I really hope I can encourage, Her.

The submission form only allows 800 characters.  So much I wanted to say.  Since you are a reader of my blog, you get to read the part I could not submit.

This part goes with Stepping out of your comfort zone:

Sometimes, we fall short of confidence, because it could've been snuffed during childhood, or as a young adult.  Let's say you're offered an opportunity to write for an e-zine. You're somewhat apprehensive, because you were muted as a child, for being so expressive.  You're now in a comfort zone of being "silent", but at your core, that isn't you... Step out!

have you made IT? :: i'll never let them do IT to me again!

Have you made IT?  I'm not speaking about the ching-ching-bling-bling IT.  I'm coming from the stand point of: self evolving-responding vs reacting-taking responsibility of direct behavior towards you IT.  ????

presenting (instead of being present):
'If I was (insert name of well known company here) people would buy from me more.' 'Man, people only buy from you if you had a celebrity biggin' up your stuff (grrrr).' 'Oh, see, at first they were buying from me, saying how my product was all-that, now they acting funny, not buying from me anymore (suck teeth).'

STOP IT

reacting (instead of responding):
'Why people always trying to get a hook-up?  If I was (insert name of well known company here), they wouldn't be treating me this way.' 'Why do I keep seeing people stealing pictures of my work?  I post my work, then I see it on someone else's website or social page!  Why do they keep doing this?!'

STOP IT

(The above have been read on my timeline and news feed on social networks.)

personal testimonial:
Years ago I met a couple--I was invited into their home.  The wife mentioned to the husband about me having a business.  'You got any samples with you?'  Yes!  That was the first thing that came out of his mouth.  He said it like he was the bourgeois and I was the hoi polloi .  LOL.  Yes, I can laugh about that now.  Actually, I chuckled (inside) back then.  I could've broke the hustle down to him.  But what would be the use (Don't get me wrong, there are times when people need correcting.  You got to know when that time is--that wasn't the time.  Wisdom.)  That moment wasn't about him, it was about me.  What was it about me, that he felt he had the audacity to ask that question, before getting to know more about the business?  Yes, me.  It may not have been me, but it was important to my growth and business growth that I figure it out.  Responding vs Reacting.

Responding isn't always about responding to an individual.  It's about responding to yourself: asking the right questions, accepting the hardcore truth about self, acknowledging your responsibility in what you attract/other's behavior.

my response:
On my drive home that day, I told myself that would never happen again.  I needed to establish myself and my business in a way that "hand-out & hook-up" wasn't written on me.  I'm not against sending complimentary items for another entrepreneur's event.  No qualms here. I started to be present in all that I did for my business--to help others to see that I meant business;I directed all those seeking free products to my Samples category online;I made my list: Women Entrepreneurs That I Will Give To.  That list consist of women entrepreneurs that I would not think twice about sending them a complimentary item for an event, because they have genuinely established a relationship with me.  Today, I receive orders for gift bag items (Funny thing is some of those orders come from women on my list.  I would do it for them anyway, but they don't take advantage.  Respect.)!  I made IT! And if you're wondering about that couple.... they became great customers, even without the husband getting the samples. *Wink* Not immediately, but over time, after observing me and the growth of my business.

When you willing evolve, when you check yourself to see if another's behavior is due to how you are operating, when you make the neccessary corrections in your work-life (a term I love from Execumama.com)... you made IT, and no one can do IT to you again.  No one can do what you won't allow them to do.  You don't have to be anyone else to get more business sent your way.  You don't need to "cry" over what others are doing to "mess" your business up--handle the business and implement or make the changes.  More success comes when you become the success.

There's Always a Ram in the Bush

My desire is to inspire women in business, to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. ~Itiel

I had another title for this blog post, but after saying those uplifting words to King T. this morning, I thought it would be fitting.

October 21, 2011.  The day of the BIG sale.  The 1-day only sale.....50% off.  The sale that more and more people are becoming aware of (all praises to The Most High).  The sale date that customers plug into their digital calendars, and tell their friends and family to follow suit (all praises to The Most High).  The DAY WHEN OUR SYSTEM FAILED.......

Yup. *sigh*  2 hours before the kick-off.

"Did you panic?  Were you upset?"  I could have been both of those things and then some, but I wasn't.  Of course I was concerned.  So instead of focusing on the #fail, we went right to work to find the solution.  I don't know...although I don't care for situations like this, I tend to function very highly in them (I refuse to throw in the towel on the "stuff" that is inside of me).

Like many of you reading this, I've been through some Sugar Honey Ice Tea.... this authentic smile on my face and super glow, ain't because life is in favor of me over anyone else.  Ya know?  But after being  seconds away from being homeless, having a molar pregnancy, having two preemies.... I could go on.  One thing I know, that I know, that I know, that I know, that I know.... There's Always a Ram in the Bush.

At the beginning of each new year I make a to-do list for the next year.  On 2010's list, I had New Website- Set Goal Date: Before the Sale of 2011 (yes, I actually had that written down!).  So we moved forward with budgeting in the $$$$$ needed for software, template, etc.  Hmmm, looks like it's not going to happen, the sale is here, maybe by the spring...no worries.  There's Always a Ram in the Bush.

Have I ever told you that King T. is the most amazing person that I know?  He is.  One way he shines so brightly is in troubleshooting.  I don't know how he can sit for hours testing, testing, testing, and testing (my eye twitches just thinking about it).  His troubleshooting skills got us up and running just under 24 hours from the #fail.  Personally, I am glad I have an in-house tech, because when I was searching the forums on a lot of the issues we were experiencing, several web designers were not getting their questions answered to help their clients.  I thought ugh, I can imagine how the client is feeling, when will my site be up.

On October 21, 2011, 10p EST, our back-door failed.  On October 22, 2011, 9p EST we had a high functioning back-door, and a new front-door.  The front-door was unexpected.... do you remember what you read above?  We did not have all of what was needed for a new website.  Last year I set the goal for the 2011 sale, but how we thought it would come--it did not.  On the day of the sale we had a new website.  Guess what?  It's exactly what I had envisioned.  What I said out of my mouth to King T., last year.  I just laugh-out-loud (with joy) every time I think about it.

There's Always A Ram in the Bush

Soooooooo...... about this new look:

It is different from what most have seen from us.  That is intentional.  When I want something, I make it a point to research.  I visited Big-Business sites in my industry and out of my industry.  I noticed two things they had in common: clean/no color site; very basic navigation.  Two components to help shoppers save time online, and to bring about a seamless shopping experience.  We have the best, loyal customers.  What do I love must about our customers?  Them spending money.  No.  The fact that although they were consistent in their purchasing, they would give 2¢ about our site.  I was listening, reading, and making notes.  So we owe our new look to those customers as well.

It's a new look, but the live good, feel good, smell good experience remains the same.

Genetic Salt-I Do What I Am

My desire is to inspire women in business, to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. Itiel

'What is this?'
"That's your son's (King T.) screen printing dvd."
'Do you remember when I built the silk screening frames, on the third floor of our home in Philadelphia?'
"No, I don't remember that."
'Really.  No, I don't think you were born.  Yeah, I decided to make Christmas cards one year.  I built all the frames, put in the screens, drew the stencils, traced the designs onto the film, and put the film onto the screens;I used three colors for my designs.'
"What did people say when you gave out the cards?"
'They liked them, but you know, they weren't aware of the detailed work that went into it.'
"Yeah, I don't know why I asked that.  The work was more for you, your enjoyment."

This was a conversation between my mother and me last weekend.

My mother is a born artist.  Not just a drawer, but an artist.  I always have that overjoyed "this is my mommy-I'm so happy to know her-to be a part of her" feeling when she shares her decades of work with me.  Talented.  Skilled.

If I didn't have a reference point, I don't think that short conversation would've resonated with me to the degree that it did.  You see King T. is insanely talented.  I watched him attend several trade-shows before deciding on going all-in on screen printing.  His setup is much more advanced.  Yet although advanced, it still takes a tremendous amount of time, work, and patience for screen printing.  So, when my mother shared that with me, you have got to know I saw a glow of awesomeness around her.

There's a question from my Execumama.com interview that haunts me resonates with me to this day: 'From a perspective of an entrepreneur, what keeps it going?  When you get to those points of launching a new campaign for marketing, and you expect a certain amount of people to buy, and that amount doesn't buy....what keeps it going?  How come you're still doing it?'  Before having that moment with my mother, my response to that question stayed in my head at the regular tone.  But man!  BASS!

'They liked them, but you know, they weren't aware of the detailed work that went into it.'
"Yeah, I don't know why I asked that.  The work was more for you, your enjoyment."

That woman put Salt in me!!  That Salt that seasons me.  That Salt that preserves all that I am, and makes me RELENTLESS.  Genetic Salt.  This is why I am still going.  Although I did not get my mother's artistic ability in the same way....I danced technically for many years.  Why did I think the artistic ability stopped at performing arts....it transferred.  When I put out a marketing campaign it is to generate sales (business), but more so I am wanting people to pay attention and indulge in this love that I've created. I truly am in love with gourmet desserts, gourmet beverages, and confections, and I want others to experience that.  This is me...it's more than business.  I do what I am.

Bertolli®_Ben & Jerry's®_redbox®=

My desire is to inspire women in business, to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. Itiel

Let's get to the nitty-gritty.

It is evident that I am not a guru, celebrity, nor celebrity-like.  However, my experience gives me the credentials to share and hopefully inspire others.

I remember a time when (almost every month) I thought about going to the bank to get a loan to operate my business. King T. would always remind me of how far we've come: 1 hour away from homelessness to head coming and staying above water.  I have a few notebooks filled with business ideas.  Although that loan would give immediate results, I am at great peace checking off each accomplishment.  As a business woman, I have implemented other divisions for growth. As an Indie biz woman, I know that the most powerful bet to continue to flourish is C-O-L-L-A-B-O-R-A-T-I-O-N.

Most Indie biz want the growth and notoriety of big biz, but many do not make the key move like big biz.  Bertolli®, Ben & Jerry's®, and redbox® is the latest collabo I've seen.  I love it (I love just about every big biz collabo)!  Purchase Bertolli® (a meal for 2)+ Ben & Jerry's® (a pint of dessert for 2)= 3 free redbox® movies.  Now I don't know who the facilitator of this collabo is, but my money is on redbox®.  Brilliant.  My theory: redbox® saw this as the perfect weekend experience for 2.  Smart.  Bertolli® and Ben & Jerry's® understood the vision and saw the $$$$$.  Big biz doesn't get comfortable in the 'people-know-about-us' mentality.  They stay in your face....working smarter not harder , they do it via collabos.

There's no doubt that Indie biz women (hand-crafters and services) can successfully grow their business, by adding collaborations to their plan.  This is the most powerful way to generate attention and potential business from consumers.  I know many think it is the crab-in-the-barrel attitude that keeps women from working together, however, my years of observing Indies has lead me to:
  • the lack of know-how
  • the lack of confidence
  • the lack of vision
Operating a successful business ain't easy, and adding something else to your plan might make you want to run, but you got to put the work in.

My most recent collaboration proposals have been sent out to two women in my network.  One is for creating for a cause, the other is cross-marketing (similar to the redbox® collabo).  I heard from the former, immediately.  She instantly saw the vision and benefits.  Hoping that the other professional woman will also see the vision.  I am always paying attention to women in my network, making notes, building a plan on how we can work together.

If you are a professional woman in business, and you can see how we can work together, send your proposal (objective, procedures, etc.) to itiel (at)smellgoodspa(dot)com.  Don't limit your creativity on how we can work together.

Business Tip:
Stack The Deck- If you have an Affiliate Marketing Program (another great tool for growing business), incorporate that into your collabos (if applicable).

Random Thought: GRRRRR

It boggles my mind!  How can I proofread three times (once quietly, twice reading out loud), and still have messy grammar?!  In my previous post (now corrected), I had the the and wondered how did I knew her.  Crazy.  I can catch other people's grammatical errors, but not always my own.

Hey I "Know" You

Have you ever had the chance to meet one of your social network "friends"?  Not people you already know.  I have.  Just this past Sunday.  I was in my LOCAL market (not even 1 mile from my house), turned around in the aisle, and saw a familiar face.  This person and I have been connected on Facebook since the beginning of 2009 (she lived in a different state).  I had a chance to meet her mother, and she met my family as well.  King T and the Warrior Princesses wondered how I knew her.  Her face is on Facebook.  It was cool and weird all at the same time.

Note: 1. As business women always be presentable when you step out of your home (I come from a family of women that always emphasized the importance of looking like a lady when exiting the house.) 2. Live an authentic life in your home.  Be good to the people that you deal with everyday behind closed doors.  When you are in public it will reflect.  You never know who you will run into.

I'm Back! 1% Inspiration 99% Perspiration. Faith Without Works Is Dead.

My desire is to inspire women in business to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. Itiel

The Majestic & Bountiful Gulf

(This is an actual shot. Not photoshopped nor stock. Amazing right?!)

I went away for a few days (yay).  An excellent break from the months' (especially last month) grinding;mental and spiritual preparation for this month's anticipated business.  Initially I was reluctant about getting away, because of our huge sale that we only do once a year.  After finalizing two local collaborations, processing retail sales all month, and beginning the fall semester of home education, I knew this is what I needed.  "Gurl (sucking teeth like mi sistas in the Caribbean), setup the home base, and work that technology like it was designed to!"  The sale was a great success! Each order warranted a praise to The Most High.

Adding new dynamics to this business is a task that I've diligently, creatively, and intelligently been working on.  For years my focus has been on the retail side, and that is now thriving on its own.  I want to do all that I  possibly can for this business;to have it run like a well-oiled machine. Over the past several months I've been working & waiting;working & listening (internally);working & being inspired;working & watching the doors open;sitting & listening.  There are many "experts" out there who have great marketing ideas.  I've never been one to completely do what some other mere mortal tells me to do; I've taken some good parts, mixed in my ideas,  worked according to my integrity, and did (do) what I thought (think) is best for my business.

I decided to put more into my Affiliate Program.  Putting in more effort has not only drawn those I communicate with over the web, but other websites that I've never heard of before.  Success!  I've implemented a unique wholesaling entity, client gifting entity, and exclusive creations for other types of businesses.  Success!  Yeah, last month was super busy.

Courage & Fear R Nemeses

A Facebook friend updated his status with this:

To acknowledge what is working
in your life is the most powerful
way of transforming yourself.

I read his status while on my getaway.  I reflected on when I came to that revelation.  That was one of the moments that changed my life.  Thus I have been propelling forward ever since.

Four months ago when moving forward with adding new dynamics, I received an email.  People are always watching.  Remain consistent and genuine.  Niki Barber a professional Doula told me that she has a new mobile boutique, Simora Rose Le Boutique Voyagé, and wanted Smell Goods' products.  Now the reason I say that people are always watching is because I ran into her mother a year  before receiving a correspondence from Niki.  Her mother is the owner of the first established reggae store in Charlotte (someone whom I have always admired as a business person, up close and afar).   She mentioned how Niki has been keeping up with me and the business via the WWW, and was very excited/happy about the consistency and the transformation (and boy has there been transformation-LOL).  You know, I walked away being happy that she was happy, not thinking of anything else.  How about she (and her business partner) was the first wholesale order!

OK, now this next collaboration.... I am so... Man... Let me.... OK, already!

You know my creations come from being inspired by gourmet desserts, gourmet beverages, and confections.  Right?  Well, four months ago while moving forward with adding new dynamics, I was driving in my vehicle when I got a thought (working & listening internally), create something for Bite Your Tongue Restaurant.  Huh?  Yes!  This is something you've always desired;to exclusively create for food businesses.  Now is the time.  What if it doesn't work out?  Now is the time. What if... I heard my mother's voice at that moment, 'There can only be two answers, yes or no.  What is the worst thing that can happen?' Now is the time.

Bite Your Tongue Restaurant was started by a wife and husband team, who decided to make Charlotte their home after Hurricane Katrina.  Over the years we have gotten to know them and Martine's amazing Louisiana style of cooking.  Again, another business owner that I have admired up close and afar.

King T, the Warrior Princesses, and I went in one day just to purchase BYT's #1 selling dessert, White Chocolate Bread Pudding.  Later, Martine admitted that she thought that was odd, but thought we just wanted to say, "Hi".

After tasting that scrumptious treat, I immediately had the fragrance notes in my olfactory brain.  The fragrance blends (yes, I created two) were spot-on.  I infused soap with each exclusive blend, typed up a letter, and shipped it out.  *Hold Breath* I followed up. *Hold Breath* An email came expressing how they loved the idea of having the soap in their restaurant as an oh-I-think-I'll-buy-this-too type of purchase.  They also understood my out-of-the-box thought:harmonizing the senses, creates an everlasting experience for customers.  "We'll take it!"  Yes!  Now is the time.  White Chocolate Bread Pudding soap is sold exclusively at Bite Your Tongue Restaurant.

I want to leave you with this from-the-mouth-of-a-child-moment:
On the last night of this getaway, sitting in a New York type pizza place in Decatur, Ga,Warrior Princess Z. says, "Everything always works out.  Even if we were being chased by wolves, something would work out."

I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but I am very happy with where I am at this very moment.

Every yard that I walked on the sandbar of the Gulf warranted a praise to The Most High.

There are several people who can be dishonest with me.  I refuse to be one of them. ~Itiel

Oh, BABY! That Was a Great Quickie!

My desire is to inspire women in business, to aspire to be the best that they can, in all aspects of their lives. Itiel

No, not that kind of quickie.  I'm talking about the other "tension reliever".  ;)

From time to time, I like to speak on the subject of health.  Exercise is essential to living your best life as a woman.  A woman who is running a home and a business needs to stay healthy, and might I add, sexy.

Working Out is a high interest of mine.  For the past several months Jillian Michaels and Tony (P90x) have been my "buddies".  There have been some months (like this month) when my schedule is full.  I have to get my workouts in, and this is where the quickies come in handy.  I thought I share with you, what I've been doing 3x a week this month:

  • Cardio:
    30 jumping jacks
    30 jump rope
30 jabs in sumo position (deep)
  • front and back leg lunges ( 2 sets/10 reps per lunge) w/ weights in hand
  • Cardio
  • dead lifts (2 sets/15 reps) w/ weights
  • Cardio
  • wide leg squats (2 sets/15 reps) w/ weights
  • Cardio
  • inner and outer thigh standing leg lifts (2 sets/ 10 reps per leg) w/ exercise bands- Can be done with ankle weights, or, no added resistance at all.
  • Cardio
  • Cool down

Always topping off my workout with a recovery drink.

In between days I do the Perfect Push-Up system.  This targets the arms and the Core.

To Your Health,

Better People...

Thought for the day:

If familiarity did not breed contempt, we could learn so much from each other. Yes, even through these social networking channels. Genuineness is a rare commodity.
