B. Beautiful Mind Body Spirit

This is Smell Goods' latest product review from B. beautiful mind, body, spirit!

Whether slathering on lotions, body moisturizer or butters, it’s all in the effort to find the ultimate product. The one that will be the end all, be all, product for beautiful radiant skin. That is only if you are not a “Product Junkie,” like so many of us self proclaimed, “Girly-girls tend to be. There is something alluring about that next wonder product, promising to take all your cares away, that always beckons us to at least give it a try. In my line of business this is not only what I enjoy doing (being on the constant hunt for little known beauty products) but I really am excited and pleasantly surprised when I do find that product produces what it’s promised.

Well ladies I had the pleasure of reviewing products that did just that, I'm talking about made good on what it promised and more. These products are infused with African inspired fragrances, with a focus on natural ingredience formulated to give your skin plenty of moisture, without the greasy feel. These products I reviewed, leave you body feeling well taken care of. Through the years I have not had been able to consistantly find body care products that have great scents along with the balance of all day moisture. It definitely seems to be an art that everyone does not possess in the industry. So for a up and coming company to have gotten two of the most important categories nailed (1. true moisture 2. long lasting, great fragrances), early in business is a definite plus. Continue with the review here.

Audio Inspiration-Buju Banton

I hope this song lifts you up. Even if you do not care for Reggae the words are meaningful.

Buju Banton-Destiny

I love this line, "I must stand true, no matter what I want." Enjoy!

Fear.FeAr.FEAR.fEaR.

No matter which way you look at it, it is all fear.

I was invited as a guest to a hair and fashion show yesterday evening. While there I had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful woman with keen fashion sense and high aspirations to match. We had a very candid conversation about her moving forward with what she so desires to achieve in life. She shared false objectives (which she admits is fear) with me as to why she has not moved forward. Just in case you share similar false objectives, I want to share my thoughts on them.

"I need an investor. I don't have the money."
- Be careful of what you ask for. Granted we would all love for someone to come by and drop a significant amount of funding in our laps. An investor wants a return in the quickness amount of time possible (like yesterday). As someone who desires to be an entrepreneur do you have your niche planned out, do you have a target market that is ready to become loyal customers, can you retain customers, can you market to get new customers, will you have that investor's money in 6 months and have money to operate your business? Do you even have anything to offer an investor?

- Don't let money be the fear to stop you from being your own boss. Definition of an entrepreneur- A person who organizes or operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risk in order to do so. You will come out of pocket more often than you think until the business starts supporting itself. I think of the owners of the company Bare Naked®. The two partners put their savings together to buy supplies, they went to local restaurants and asked if they could use the kitchen at night to bake up batches of granola, the next morning they would be out on the street selling the granola, money increased, but it went back into the business. Look at them today! True entrepreneurs! I think of hearing Magic Johnson on the Tom Joyner Morning Show this morning. He stated that although he was Magic Johnson it did not matter to the banks. To them he was Magic Johnson the basketball superstar not the businessman. Magic Johnson did not obtain funding from investors initially, he did fundraisers with those in his circle. Are you getting the picture on this? Work to get what you desire.

- Your customers are your investors. How can you gain money without having something to offer? How can you have something to offer without having the customer service to go along with it? How can you have something to offer and customer service without having a vision? Find your niche. Fine tune your skills. Work on maintaining a humble spirit and a kind heart. Show your customers that you appreciate them, they will send people your way. Invest in your customers and they will invest in you.

- Ladies, yes ladies. You are millionaires and you don't even know it. Don't believe me. Go check your closet right now and look at all the things that were purchased because you thought you deserved it at the time. Guess what you deserve even more? To be financially free within the next 10,20,30 years!

"I don't want to get out there and then things fail."
- Wow, now that is a big fear. To allow something that has not happened to stop you. To premeditate all of the impossibilities. A wise entrepreneur uses several avenues to capture and hold the attention of consumers. What else do you aspire to accomplish in life? Is it helping others? Is it caring for four-legged creatures in need? Is it to bring balance and peace to your community? Is it to bring world peace. If so, research the ways that your business can be used in those areas. Think out of the box.

"My family and friends have said some terrible things to me."
-Debunk naysayers! Yes, even your family has to be pushed to the side sometimes. If you truly have the entrepreneurial spirit, let me say this to you, and I am only going to say it once. Being an entrepreneur I have come to realize that there are very few people who possess that spirit. The majority of people do not have the entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore, it is difficult for them to see a dream or vision that you have. It is not their fault, that is just how it is. You are only to blame if you allow them to extinguish your spirit. We all have been told hurtful things. I know I have, and yes it almost crippled me, but once (as I always proclaim) my husband shone that light on my entrepreneurial spirit, I fought to stay in this place where I am now.

-I recently read on Twitter that Ted Turner's friends said, "What! No one will ever watch a 24 hour news show!" HA!!! Who is naysaying now?! CNN baby!

-"Get over it!" Sounds harsh doesn't it? I know, I said it to myself hundreds of times.

No matter what successes you have, there will always be fear trying to come through the window. You get that investor. Guess what? Fear will still be there. You become a big hit. Guess what? Fear will still be there. You overcome all the naysayers. Guess what? Fear will still be there. Guess what? Fear cannot have any power over you, because you will build your confidence by knowing that you have what it takes to become a success and that you have something to offer and people will want it. So what am I saying? Get that fear out, because you got work to do. Financial freedom is at the door. Your sense of peace is at the door.

I Heart My Customers

Growing this business isn't easy, but I love waking up to it every morning. One thing that keeps me going are the encouraging words that I receive from my customers on a daily basis. I woke up to find these kind words this morning. I ALWAYS enjoy ALL of your products. You've always taken such pride and consideration for what we, your customers desire and for that I appreciate you. I've been a customer of yours for years now and I am proud to see you blossom into a nationally known mixologist and genius in natural products. Look for my new order in a few days. Thanks for embracing me as a customer and a friend!

Just recently a customer listened to an utter and commented on not saying my name correctly, but now she has it down pack. ;O) Utterli is also in the business of helping you save time and effort. No more copying and pasting text from one social network to the next. Simply Cross-Post your information and thoughts to Twitter, Facebook, blog, and more. Or grab a Widget and post it to your blog (to the right), MySpace, or wherever you like.

Utterli is a great tool! Maybe this is the last social networking site that I will join.......

Twitter

Yes, Smell Goods '98™ can now be found on Twitter twittering with all the other tweets (say that fast 5 times). If you are already a tweet, follow me (twitter.com/smellgoodslady) and I will follow you! You can also check out the Twitter box to the right with all of my updates.

Why Twitter? Well at first I was determined not to get sucked in. LOL! I asked my bath and body sista SheaBath her opinion on Twitter, and she broke it down to me, basically letting me know that Twitter is a closer knit online community. She sold me, but what really got me was the one, simple question that I have to answer, "What are you doing?"

October 2008

What happened @ Smell Goods '98™ this month?

Raising Funds
I have a passion for empowering girls and young ladies. At the beginning of this year I made moves to reflect that passion by creating the Stay Sweet Collection for girls and young ladies. The Stay Sweet Collection is used to raise funds for grass-root organizations that are working diligently to help tween and teen girls to recognize their self-worth. I was very successful in raising funds for the first featured grass-root. However, I am not being very successful this time around. Here it is October 30th and in two days this fundraiser ends. I have blogged, posted to my many networks, sent personal emails, sent out monthly newsletters.... yet nothing! Well, tomorrow is another day, and I am very hopeful that in two days Smell Goods '98™ will be donating money to the featured grass-root.

If you are successful with raising funds, please share your tips with me, info(at)smellgoodspa(dot)com. I really want to be successful at this.

Marketing
I've decided to contribute to the Sista Sampler. I was a bit apprehensive, because with samplers you tend to run into people who like "free stuff". Now there isn't anything totally wrong with that, but when an Indie is trying to grow a business by sending out free product, gaining a new customer is always rewarding. So if past samplers have not been rewarding why participate with the Sista Sampler? Two words: target market. The Sista Sampler is hosted by In The Company Of Sistas (ITCOS), an online networking group that brings merchants of color and consumers of color together.

I was contacted in September by Elise of The Jasmine Trust requesting product donations. The Jasmine Trust is an organization that trains Standard Poodle Service Dogs for the Disabled. Smell Goods '98™ has donated product for The Jasmine Trust's 4th Annual Auction.

I have submitted goodies for product review! In the quest for maintaining a strong online presence, I always try to stay on top of the "who's who" in bath and body review blogging. These bloggers cater to savvy bath and body enthusiasts. Submitting product has been very beneficial for Smell Goods '98™.

Customer Marketing
I work diligently on bringing attention to Smell Goods '98™, but I also put forth much effort to keep my customers. I can't expect my loyal customers to hang around just because they love the product. I always try to make my customers "fall in love" with Smell Goods '98™ over and over again. I have recently started Buy 2 get 1 Free Wednesdays! The response to this promo was very positive. I noticed that customers strayed away from their "norm" signature fragrance to try something new. Next month I will start the Scent of the Month promo, which I think they will enjoy!

Cross-Marketing
I am very excited about this! In September I met a woman on one of my networking groups that also has a passion for empowering girls. Immediately we both saw the benefits of cross-marketing our businesses. This month we finalized our commitment. I look forward to sharing more with you soon.

What was on your plate this month? Any new ideas? Make any new contacts? I would love to read about it!

Objectives

Every now and then it is good to refresh your mind and heart with your objectives. In this world of "more money, more money more money", "consume more, consume more, consume more", one's mind can get caught up in the madness of it all. Sure, I enjoy making money like the next person, but I don't want to get caught up in the life of making money, to make more money, to make more money, that I forget about why I started this business and why I enjoy doing what I am doing.

The objective of being my own boss and creating products was not and is not to have my items in large stores. To me that takes away the nostalgic aspect and it takes away the personal one-on-one (which I enjoy). It also can bring more pain than joy (just observation). I love exclusivity! A specialty store/____ (cannot disclosed) in target areas, and a much larger project is what I am (we are) working towards. I may not get to see the fulfillment of the larger project, but I am grooming my children in this business, and hopefully they will see it through. I know that may sound gloomy, but that is the reality of really growing a business. It can take many years to get a business to its final destination.

The objective of being my own boss and creating products was not and is not to have money bursting out of my seams. If you can create a business that can take care of your basic living (food, shelter, travel, bills) without worrying about living, that can help you help someone else, that can produce an inheritance for your children, that lays a monetary foundation for your children so that they can achieve their dreams, then you have build a successful business.

I look around and every now and then in this big business world, I see a family owned business that has grown over the years. They might not be known by millions of people, but they are still so successful and their product is loved by many. They may not be suffering in a slowing economy, because they never went beyond their means. I know this system tells us, "Don't worry with how much you consume, you can work work work to pay it off." If you haven't realized it, that is a dumb way to live.

I believe the beauty in owning your business is doing what you love and becoming financially strong so that you can enjoy life.

As I close down for a few days, I will be reflecting on my objectives and enjoying my life and the life around me (husband, children).

Food For Thought

Words that inspire me. Words that encourage me. Words that I aspire to live by daily.

"The ultimate goal of karate lies not in victory, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." Master Gichin Funakoshi

"Be forgiving to a fault." Les Brown

"If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together." African Proverb

"You've got to get up every morning with determination if you're going to go to bed with satisfaction." George Lorimer

"Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you love to do, in order to have what you want."

"Excellence is commitment to completion!" Bob Proctor

"No one will remember what you said. No one will remember what you did. They will remember how you made them feel." Nelson Mandela

"And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Galatians 6:9

"When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn." Harriet Beecher Stowe

A Girl's Mind Review

Back in July I met Chrishawn Simpson on one of my networking groups. Chrishawn, a Girl Life Specialist, promotes positive self-esteem in girls and young women. Chrishawn also reviews body care products, and so I just had to send her the Stay Sweet Sugar Whips that I have created for girls and young women.

I appreciate Chrishawn's glowing words about my product. Read the review at A Girl's Mind!

Oil Cleansing Method

The Oil Cleansing Method is a very effective non-traditional way of cleaning your face. If you have blackheads, whiteheads, acne, dry skin, oily skin, and/or balance skin and your skin care regimen is not working for you, try The Oil Cleansing Method. The reason this method works is because oil dissolves oil. Contrary to popular belief, oil is not the cause of your skin blemishes. Your lack of water intake, hormone changes, bacteria, and dead skin cells are causes for skin problems.

Below is a wonderful article explaining The Oil Cleansing Method. Although not mentioned, I like to add a small amount of Tea Tree oil to my blend for its anti-bacterial properties. Do not use Castor Oil alone, you must dilute it with another oil. I find that Extra Virgin Olive Oil is good for this process also. Do not use too much Castor Oil, as it will dry out the skin. Follow the recommended blending recipe below.

Try this method and come back to share your results.

The basic concept of this skin care and cleansing method is that the oil used to massage your skin will dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and found itself stuck in your pores. The steam will open your pores, allowing the oil to be easily removed. Should you need it, the smallest drop of the same oil formula patted over damp skin will provide the necessary lubrication to keep your skin from over-compensating in oil production.

The starting point for creating your own, personalized skin cleansing oil blend is knowing your general skin type. Those with dry skin will want less Castor Oil. Those with oily skin will want to blend in more. Finding your perfect combination of oils will probably take a little bit of trial and error, so start with very small batches. Once you know what your ratio of oils looks like, you'll be able to blend much more at a time for convenience.

Some suggestions in creating your blend of deep cleansing oil:

Oily Skin: Try a blend of 30% Castor Oil to 70% Sunflower Seed Oil.
Balanced Skin: Try a blend of 20% Castor Oil to 80% Sunflower Seed Oil.
Dry Skin: Try a blend of 10% Castor Oil to 90% Sunflower Seed Oil.

You can vary these percentages to match your own skins needs. If your skin feels too dry, you'll need to use less Castor Oil and replace it with more Sunflower Seed Oil. Keep in mind that Castor Oil is the drawing, cleansing, and purging oil for your pores. The Sunflower Seed Oil is to dilute the Castor Oil in viscosity (thickness) and additionally provide moisture, nutrients, and other benefits. My own, personal blend, for my sometimes oily, sometimes dry, frequently flakey, and easily irritated skin is about 25% Castor Oil to 75% Sunflower Seed Oil. I mix and store my mixture in a clean four-ounce flip-top bottle for convenience. When you go to replenish your oil blend, I suggest cleaning your bottle thoroughly with dish soap or the dishwasher. Better yet, if you can replace the bottle, this is ideal. We want to be extremely cautious in introducing bacteria to the bottle.

First and foremost, this is typically done in the evening, prior to bed. There should be no need for deep cleansing in the morning if you're waking up with skin cleansed the night before. In the morning, a quick wipe with a warm washcloth should suffice. We don't want to overcleanse our skin as this will serve only to irritate and cause more oil production. The objective of using this method is to deep clean while balancing our skins oil production at the same time.

-You'll need a soft washcloth, your oil blend, and hot, running water.

-Pour a generous puddle of oil into the palm of your hand. Roughly, the size of a quarter, but more is acceptable. Rub your hands together to warm the oil and smooth over your face.

-Begin massaging the oil into your face. This will remove makeup, dirt, and other impurities, so there is no need to use a makeup remover or wash your face prior to the massage. I've found that this removes even my stubborn waterproof mascara and concealer.

-Using slow, firm motions across the skin, massage the oil deeply into your pores. Take your time and focus on your problem areas. You want the oil to work into your pores so that blackheads and the like can be dissolved and steamed away.

-As you're massaging, let your mind drift off to something calming and breathe deeply. Take this time to relax and release some of the stress that your body is harboring. Sit down, breathe deeply, and take your time. Give the oil enough time to work on dissolving the impurities in your pores and give yourself enough time to unwind. Picture what your face would look like if it were completely clear and free from blemishes. Focus on that image and know that it is attainable. Trust that it is attainable. Accept that it is attainable. You can have clear skin, free of blemishes and you will have clear skin, free of blemishes. Focus on perfect skin and breathe deeply.

-Once you're satisfied that your pores are saturated and you're feeling calm, pick up your washcloth and soak it in clean, steamy water. We want the water to be warm enough to open your pores and remove the oil. Cool water will not open your pores, nor will it remove the oil efficiently. We're not scalding our skin, we're steaming to coax our pores to release the oil carrying the impurities. We're essentially steaming our skin as an esthetician would, but without the luxury of a steam machine.

-Hold the washcloth to cover your face. Allow it to stay until it cools. You will feel your pores releasing the impurities. Wipe the oil gently away and rinse the washcloth well in hot, running water. Hold the washcloth to your face again, allowing it to cool. Wipe gently, rinse well, and repeat two or three more times. Avoid any temptation to scrub, as you'll find it's completely unnecessary and your skin will be soft, smooth, and free of flakes without the additional manual exfoliation and irritation that will result. Impurities, dead skin cells, and bacteria will be gently swept away.

-Have no fear of the oil, as the steamy washcloth will remove it. The Castor Oil, though it is an oil, will help with the removal of the other oils, as well. It is our main cleansing oil and is easily removed with warm water.

-If your skin feels tight, take a tiny drop of your oil blend, rub it between your clean, damp palms and pat it onto your damp skin. Gently massage any oil residue into your skin so there is no film of oil left sitting on the surface. Your skin should now glow!

This deep cleansing method should be done regularly, but not too frequently. You'll know if you're deep cleansing too frequently by the dryness that your skin will exhibit. Don't be surprised if you find you've unblocked an oil flow for the first few days. Once you remove the plugs from your pores, they will begin functioning properly again. Perfect skin won't happen overnight and while it should take a few massages to achieve your goal, you should notice a huge difference in your skin after the first deep cleansing massage. Give your skin a few days to adjust and adapt to being clean and clear of blockages; understand that the new oil coming from your skin is actually a good sign and will balance out very shortly. You'll find redness and irritation subsiding. You'll find your skin losing that "congested," and thick feeling.

Who's Caring About Young Mothers?

Are you that person who shoots out negative comments here and there about the lifestyle of our young mothers? Are you one to ask, "Where is the Village?", but have no active role in it yourself? Young Mothers need guidance, understanding, support, friendship, care, tips, and love from all of the experience mothers around them. Motherhood is an honor, and we must help our young mothers embrace every aspect of it. However, motherhood cannot be taken lightly, and we should be positively active in our young girls' lives to prevent behavior that will lead to such a premature role. I admire and I take my hat off to the organizations that are purposely working diligently to change the lives of our young girls for the better. The change that they are making now will be evident in the next generation.

One such organization making change is located in Texas. Texans ya'll have a gem living among you, and her name is Tequita Odom.

About Young Mother:
Young Mother Magazine is a magazine unlike any other parenting magazine because we assist adolescent parents with living day to day life as a parent and youth. The purpose of YM is to cater to the financial, economic, life, and educational needs of adolescent parents ages 13-25 through parenting classes, research based articles, and promoting positive mentoring amongst their peers. YM Magazine believes in strengthening our community by approaching weaknesses proactively with research based information, mentoring and volunteer involvement. In just 2003 alone, Fort Worth had one of the highest rates of still births in Texas and it will continue to rise without magazines and other businesses like my own that continue to teach young mothers about the consequences of not being fully educated on the life they've created. We want to help educate young mothers on the effects their lifestyles and decisions have on their children´s future and health, to equip them with tools that will assist them in good decision making, and stressing the importance of being a positive role model for their families. At our magazine we also teach the old saying "it takes a village to raise a child" because we believe if we are going to change the lives of our young women and their families, we all have to do our part in making it our business to care. Our vision is to create a more positive, healthier, and stable life for the parents and children. We are rooted in Fort Worth, Texas so if you here a "ya´ll" in any of the articles, you know it is just a cultural thing. Our website is www.youngmother.org.

About Tequita Odom:

I am Tequita Odom, Founder and Publisher of Young Mother Magazine. I started this magazine because I saw a real need for positive guidance in the lives of the young women I worked with and their children. I have worked with at-risk youth for six years and within that time period I have become very close to my work and the girls in it. Their trials and tribulations also sparked my desire for change in our community and in their lives. I was also one of those girls with no initial guidance on what kind of mother to be or how to raise normally functioning kids. I am a college student, a mother of a six year old by the name of Tauje, a mentor, a christian, a full time worker, and full time Editor in Chief of YM Magazine. Looking to make a change early on in my career, I looked towards more education by going to child development courses, as well as pursue my degree in Organizational Management with a minor in Public Administration. I love what I'm doing and would not trade it for the world. It is truly a blessing to be a part of enriching someone's life.

It is my pleasure to use Smell Goods '98™ as a tool to assist Tequita in her endeavors for young mothers. From September to November, Smell Goods will be donating 40% from the sales of Stay Sweet Sugar Whips* to Young Mother Magazine. Show your support and be a part of the solution.

*Any other product(s) added to the Stay Sweet line during this time will go towards Young Mother Magazine.

One beauty spot that is often overlooked is our hands. It is our hands that care for sick loved ones. They create sustainable lives for families and yet they are greatly ignored.
Writing, creating, and touching are the very things that facilitate beauty in this world, yet they go on neglected, even as we go about pampering the rest of our bodies.

Our “divine tool” as Aristotle described, needs a little extra special attention just like the skin on our face. The same basic principles apply, but different products are used for extra dry skin as well as an occasional manicure.

1. Cleanse- washing with gentle, preferably natural soap or hand wash fortified with shea butter or skin loving oils.
2. Exfoliate- Exfoliate once or twice per week with a sugar scrub fortified with skin loving oils.
3. Moisturize-Twice per day and always after dishwashing and washing your hands, apply moisturizer. Dry, cracked, or chapped hands are uncomfortable and are susceptible to infection. To help relieve more extreme cases, you can use a skin loving oil such as almond oil or and enriched custard style lotion, preferably natural. Massage into your hands and at bedtime, cover your hands with cotton gloves.
4. Protect-Wear gloves when cleaning with harsh detergents or gardening

Using the following hand care regimen will surely give you soft and supple hands that would feel good to the ones receiving your loving touch.

'I don't want to die poor'

This is a very inspirational story. To all the women out there, be encouraged, move forward, things are not going to just happen for you, you have to make them happen... only if you truly want them to.

‘I don’t want to die poor’
By Wilfred Zulu

Sylvia Banda was only 24 when she realised that if she continued with her job in the public service, she would, like many who have gone before her, die in poverty.

The 49-year old Sylvia with an investment capital of US$100 in her venture is now standing on the threshold of US$4.7 million hotel-and-lodge development, making her one of the most enterprising persons not only in Zambia but the region at large.

She reminisced: “The start of my business was not easy…challenges were many but what mattered most to me was a better future for my family, country and Africa as at large,” she told API.

Having left the poorly-paid job as a teacher 25 years ago, Sylvia ‘invaded’ her kitchen; she took away a stove, fridge, mealie meal, chicken, salt, cooking oil and the like. A proprietor of a warehouse in the city’s industrial area had agreed to allow her use his premises free of charge – perhaps thinking that she would not go far.

“The first day was funny. My small restaurant had no tables, no chairs, so I simply said to my customers, ‘welcome to a standing buffet’. Amazingly the first meal was all sold out”.

The next day, the woman whose government service monthly salary amounted to not more than US$ 150 (K500, 000), put the US$100 she had saved into the new business which was promising good returns.

Shortly afterwards, Sylva Catering was born. Within a year, she was running a full operational cafeteria with many outside catering orders.

But even under the cards of limited funds, Sylvia feared getting a bank loan because the then “49 percent interest rate was too high”.

She managed on her own, though. Today she has expanded her catering business to include a guesthouse, catering college, and cafeterias spread across the capital Lusaka. They operate under the banner ‘Sylva Professional Catering Services’ and is situated at the University of Zambia.

As you enter her office, you will be greeted by several trophies decorating her desk and shelves. In 2001, she bagged the Arch of Europe 20th century Award that she consecutively retained in 2004 and 2005. In the year 2001, she was honoured as one of the six most outstanding African entrepreneurs and in 2003, the American biographical researchers voted her as Woman of the Year. Not to mention a string of local honours.

In the recent past, she has ventured into the promotion of indigenous food. This includes dried pumpkin leaves and seeds, pounded groundnuts, dried black jack leaves, dried and fresh okra, among many others. These foods are packaged under the label Sylva Food Solutions.

“We package almost all known indigenous Zambian food and sell them in supermarkets besides putting them on our menu. We also do exports to countries like Angola Congo DR and Nigeria,” she added.

The promotion of indigenous food has been well received both locally and internationally. In 2005, she exhibited at the Japan-Expo.

Locally, it is no surprise that high profile organizations ‘queue’ up at her office for orders. Her clients include Unilever South-East Africa, British Council, hotels and lodges.

Professional bodies are also tapping into her knowledge. She sits on the boards of Zambia Chamber of Small and Medium Scale Business Associations, Vocational Training under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the newly instituted Zambia Development Agency.

In order to compare her achievements with those of the outside world, six years ago, she joined the US-based Professional Women’s Advisory Board. And in 2003, Sylvia toured Washington DC on a USAID educational and cultural programme.

“It is hard to accept that having started with almost nothing and without any loan, my business is being appreciated worldwide. This tells me that money alone is not a launch-pad for success but commitment, ability driven by vision,” she said.

Despite all these successes scored, her journey has not been devoid of challenges. The 1980s-90s unstable economy chorused by high inflation threatened her business. While trying to beat the inflationary effects, her customers complained that the products were too expensive. The other area is corruption.

“There are times when we have failed to get business from government institutions because our competitors opted to corrupt some official. But as God-fearing people, we cannot give kickbacks,” said Sylvia who together with her husband are devout Christians.

She added that costing mechanism of products is important in business. “We are not bothered by the pricing of our competitors. We would not change the price of a product merely because somebody is pegging the same at a lower cost”.

But what is the secret to her achievements? “God!” she emphatically responds.

“In whatever we do, we always put God first and seek His guidance.’

How Good It Feels To Be Loved By YOU

A few seconds ago I received a phone call from a customer in Arizona. This customer found Smell Goods a few months back by googling "good deodorant". Thank you SEO (search engine optimization) for paying off! During our initial phone conversation she expressed how she really needed a deodorant that would effectively work against strong underarm odors and that was natural. She purchases the Essentials Deodorant Powder. Today she calls to share that she was so happy to receive a compliment on how good she is smelling. She expressed that before using the Essentials Deodorant Powder, compliments were not coming her way.

I thank you for the love people!

History of Incense

Incense-grains of resins (sometimes mixed with spices) that burn with a fragrant odor, widely used as an oblation. It is commonly sprinkled on lighted charcoal contained in a censer, or thurible.

Light, extinguish, enjoy. To date incense is one of the worlds' best discoveries. A blend of aromatic ingredients that bring forth beneficial effects on body and mind. Incense are available in many different forms, sticks, cones, powder, rocks (resin, sap), and botanical mixtures. Incense has been used for centuries by many of the Ancients for their medical practice and spiritual traditions. Some modern day enthusiast follow the practice of their forefathers, however, most burn incense for pleasure, relaxation, and just because they smell good.

Historically, the chief substances used as incense were Frankincense and Myrrh. These resins were combined with aromatic wood and bark, seeds, roots, and flowers. The ancient Hebrews used an incense mixture of Frankincense, storax (bitter gum resin), onycha (membrane of a mollusk), galbanum (bitter gum resin), and spices with salt added as a preservative (Exodus 30). Frankincense and Myrrh resins are still used today in many homes. The resins are burned on charcoal, placed in a censer, offering up a sweet aroma. Credit is given to China and Japan for today's most commonly used incense, the stick and cone. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the stick incense was developed. The craft of creating incense became so very popular in Japan that entire schools were committed to the art. In the late 1800s during the World's Fair in Chicago, Japan introduced its latest invention, the cone incense.

Tips:Benefits of Massage

Guest Writer: Author and Blog Talk Radio Host Barbara Howard

BENEFITS OF MASSAGE
We all know a massage feels good and can make us more relaxed, but there are also many, many health benefits that come with a massage.

Therapeutic effects include:

• Stimulating blood and lymph circulation

• Loosening muscular tension

• Toning and firming muscles

When fibers stop sliding over each other easily, it's most likely the cause of people not getting enough exercise, too much exercise, or physical or mental tension. These factors cause the drop of any increase in muscle tone

The waste products from muscular activity, like carbon dioxide, lactic acid and urea, build up in the muscles. Massage therapy fosters drainage of those wastes, therefore restoring there normal functions

• Stress reduction

The effect in reducing stress is seen as one the most valuable aspects, since stress is blamed for causing up to 90% of human diseases

• Increased muscle flexibility and range of motion

For both of these, this results in increased power and performance, which helps you work efficiently and with proper intensity to facilitate the body's muscle-building response

• Shortens recovery time between workouts

Waste products such as lactic and carbonic acid build up in muscles after exercise. Increased circulation to these muscles help to eliminate toxic debris and shorten recovery time

• Prevent over-training.

Massage has a relaxing effect on the muscles, as well as a sedative effect on the nervous system. This can prevent over-training syndrome which has limiting effect on muscle building.

• Aids in fat loss

According to some research, massage may burst the fat capsule in subcutaneous tissue so that the fat exudes and becomes absorbed. In this way, combined with proper nutrition, massage may help in weight loss.

• Prevents and even heals injuries

By stretching connective tissue, massage improves circulation to help prevent or break down adhesions. Massage also influences the excretion of certain fluids (nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur) necessary for tissue repair

Massage therapy also fosters the drainage of lymph, causing better circulation of the blood. Because of this, the skin looks much better than if drainage was difficult. Why bother with the how the skin looks? Often, the appearance of the skin is usually a good indicator of a person’s inner condition.

The effect of massage upon the nervous system gives birth to the feeling of relaxation. How? By stimulating the sensory nerve endings located within the skin. Signals are sent to the brain by the central nervous system. This in turn produces the experience of feeling good. Once again because of this action, a new reaction takes place by causing a significant reduction in the body's stress level.

Massage improves circulation and general nutrition of muscles. This appears to be the most valuable fitness-related benefit. After a muscle is exercised, vital nutrients must be supplied in order for it to increase in size. Massage maximizes the supply of nutrients and oxygen though increased blood flow, which helps the body rebuild itself.

My Inspiration for Today

Reading over my list of all the things I need to do today: practice karate (blue belts) with warrior princesses, work on a few lessons with warrior princesses, fill Smell Goods' orders, touch base with business contacts, visit my online networks, exercise, etc. The Smell Goods' line rang, and a customer who placed an online order yesterday was on the other end. A new customer who found Smell Goods on Michael Baisden's MingleCity. So I decided to visit the boards to view how many other "black" Bath & Body retailers posted their information. I was curious because this isn't the first customer over the course of two weeks that found Smell Goods on those boards.

So getting to my inspiration. While on the boards I decided to visit Pookie.com. These sistas are truly an inspiration. Smell Goods '98™ is coming ladies!

Customer Service

How important is customer service? Really!

Before owning my business, I had years of practice with customer service by dealing with the public on a daily basis. I attended college for Retail Merchandising and Marketing. I interned at The Limited (back then it was all the rage), and because I was so fabulous (wink), I was hired. That started my journey in managing retail stores. As I look back on that journey I realize that I have always given excellent customer service. Secret shoppers would come into the stores posing as desperate turn difficult turn disgruntle customers. I would always handle each situation with grace, listened to their concerns, and did what I could to make them happy. Those Secret Shoppers could never get me, so I would end up with $100 cash in hand!! Boy, I could use a Secret Shopper right now.

All the useful information that I gathered within those years, has spilled over into what I do today. It is very important for me to have happy, satisfied customers now and in the years to come. The bottom line is that customers just want to be heard, they want superb product, and they want excellent service.

The larger the company, the better the customer service. Right?
Here's an insightful article that I read this morning on MSN

Have you experience negative customer service lately? Speak on it.

What do you expect from a business? Speak on it.

Do you think you should receive outstanding customer service if you are a "bad" customer? Speak on it.

Changing. Growing. Success. Manifestation. Maintaining.

Five years ago I would not have thought that I would wake up at 7 am to process orders. Five years ago I would not have thought that my inbox would overflow with orders daily. Five years ago I would not have thought that my products would be in the homes of people from all walks of life. Yes, only five short (seemed far away back then) years ago, I desired to have more for my business, I knew the growth would come, but did not know exactly when. In April, Smell Goods celebrated its 10th year of being in business. With the doors being opened from The Most High, my will, my dedication, my love for creating, my know how, my loyal customers, with consumers willing to give the product a try, and my family, Smell Goods has gotten to this successful place.

Change is inevitable. Change can be a wonderful thing when balanced, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Change cannot be forced. All one can do is what is humanly possible, to maintain a positive journey, to work hard and smart, to think positive, to pick themselves up when they have fallen, and to enjoy the process as change is taking place. Personally, at times those things were a struggle for me. I wanted business to always be consistent. I wanted support from those that I supported, I found myself comparing what I was doing with others, I was not enjoying the process! Then one day back then, I made a decision, with my husband's help, to enjoy the process. Once I did that everything within me became stronger and more secure. I became more personable and more of an encourager to other women that had the same roles as I. This positive change started to overflow into my business, and believe it or not that is when the success and growth escalated. All the things positive that I knew could happen were coming into manifestation.

With change, growth, and success, comes a shift in the matrix. Maintaining a solid family foundation and excellent health are two things that I have not wavered from. There is no use in building a business to its fullest potential, if one allows their family and health to fall by the wayside. I have found that eating properly, getting in weekly workouts, taking supplements (including immune boosters), having a set time to start and stop working (you can feel when your brain is shutting down), playing daily with my children, dating my husband, visiting all of my doctors annually, sharing time with others, and having get-a-ways, gives me that necessary stamina and confidence to move forward.

Myla's Bags-Indie Designer

Handbag Designer, Michaela, recently gave kudos to Smell Goods for the wonderful goodies she received. See what Michaela of Myla's Bags had to say.

I love handbags designed by indie designers. Isn't this a lovely feminine pattern?

Enhance Her INSIDE Beauty-Stay Sweet

On the road to womanhood, baggage collected during the teenage years can make the transition challenging. Once forgiveness of self is obtained and there is growth from the experiences, it is imperative to help the next generation of young females. During the teenage years, young females from all walks of life need the support of the village. With the demands of fitting in, and the lack of support from home and the community, the majority of young females start to go down the path that will diminish their self-worth.

Smell Goods ‘98™ is using their business as a positive tool to uplift and empower this generation of young females. Purveyors of bath and body products, they have created Stay Sweet Sugar Whips, to enhance the INSIDE, outside beauty of preteens to young females. Each Stay Sweet Sugar Whip has a pink card attached inscribed with a powerful, positive affirmation! The owners of Smell Goods ‘98™ are advocates for organizations that cater to the needs of young females and teen mothers. Therefore, Stay Sweet Sugar Whips are used to support such organizations, through fundraising, product donations, and charitable donations.

Positive affirmations can make a world of difference in a young female’s life. Positive affirmations can uplift her spirit. Positive affirmations assures her of that familiar strength that is deep in her soul. Positive affirmations help to remind her of what she will, and what she will NOT accept into her life. Positive acceptance of self is fundamental in a young female’s life, from preteen to a young beautiful woman. In a stage of vulnerability, confusion, and unstableness; In a stage that poses the question, "Where do I fit in?" Positive affirmations can empower young females to make a smoother transition into adulthood.

Web Designing & Web Hosting Women

A few days ago I met a customer online who has a Web Designing business. Today I met another person online who has a Web Hosting and Domain Registration business. Both women! More and more women are making their own way in these fields. It is very much needed and understood, the majority of online businesses are owned and operated by women. So women helping women is a great thing! Creating an online presence can be challenging, confusing, and possibly frustrating. If you do not have the know-how or the patience to learn the ins and outs, using a professional service could benefit you.

My husband takes care of Smell Goods' template implementation, web-hosting, and domain registration. If it wasn't for his patience, I would of handed everything over to a web designer. But, I am glad we stuck it out. Over the years our website has gone from right brain overloaded (too many images/graphics), to site-builders, to sleek and e-commerce friendly. It did not come easy or overnight. He continued to learn all he could through forums and troubleshooting(ugh), he even taught himself some Flash (now that was pulling hair). I took a SEO class, learned html coding, learned how to setup modules, etc. It was hard, but looking back I would not trade what it took to gain this knowledge for nothing. And guess what? I am still learning, because there is always something new to learn when it comes to an online presence on the WWW.
